I’m excited about the upcoming VideoLAN Movie Creator! I’m also excited about making bulleted lists lately!
1. Pedigree
The related-project VLC Media Player is a well-known cross-platform project that inspires confidence in the VLMC. I’m not sure exactly how to quantify “name-brand” power as a factor of success (or even if such a thing can be quantified), but this is a good thing.
2. Desire
I need a simple, moderately powerful video editing solution. I have a friend that usually handles video editing but he’s a Windows guy and uses Adobe something-or-another. I’d like to be able to “rough cut” some ideas and maybe handle some of the work myself.
3. Drama
And, of course, here’s something I forsee: VLC is probably one-of-the-if-not-the best known cross-platform not-available-out-of-the-box media players. I have similar high hopes for VLMC.
Now, think on that and put it in the context of Miguel de Icaza’s recent call for a Moonlight-based video editor. A favorite tactic of Team Mono has been to develop and promote Mono/Moonlight based alternatives over similar or more qualified non-Mono/Moonlight software – maybe spicing up the promotion with a little slander against the developer or lying about the non-Mono project’s status if the mood strikes.
Specifically to this issue, though, a Moonlight video editor is an especially crafty way to strengthen Novell dependency. The Media Pack is only “safe” if you get it from Novell, after all.
So, consider this post a bit of a prediction: I think VLMC will be a great success – along similar lines as VLC – and I think there will be some “friction” should a Moonlight-based video editor come to fruition.
