Huzzah! New version of Rhythmbox is released with lots of bug fixes and other goodies!
Rhythmbox holds a special place in my heart: not only is it the best Linux audio player I’ve ever used (and I’ve tried every one I’ve ever ran across), but it’s one of those driving forces that keep me motivated.
Best Linux Audio Player
There are several compelling choices – don’t get me wrong – and some do a thing or two better than Rhythmbox, and some do a thing that Rhythmbox doesn’t; but there’s no player that is overall superior to Rhythmbox for my music use.
I use many features but my main focus is on managing a large library of music (well over 20,000 tracks), quick selection and burn-to-CD process, and handling lots of podcasts (including iPod sync).
Rhythmbox is so good for me that I still use it on my main KDE desktop. Every other GNOME or GTK application I avoid, mainly out of preference to avoid additional library clutter.
Now I must say if Amarok 2 continues to progress at its current rate things could change - those guys are really doing some great work and I would really like a “pure” KDE environment.
Until then, though Rhythmbox stays.
Keeping me motivated
There are several things I noticed that moved me into a more “activist” stance from a more “whatever” stance, and Rhythmbox was one of them.
See, there was this big push to replace Rhythmbox with Banshee in Ubuntu, and the reasoning was that Rhythmbox was bloated on the CD, Rhythmbox doesn’t scale, and Rhythmbox development had stopped.
Well, problem was none of the charges against Rhythmbox were factually true, so why were people saying these things? And thus I was motivated to speak out against misinformation.
On being called a “hater”
I always chuckle a little when Team Apologista breaks out the “hater” or “fear-mongerer” labels.
I can only speak to my own motivations, and in this case I saw people trying to replace something I used and found the arguments baseless. Not sure where the ”hate” or “fear” enters into the my-side of the equation?
I suppose you could say I hate liars and fear corporate subversion of Free Software. So, if you’re feeling “hate” and “fear” …
