EditShare recently announced they will be introducing Lightworks Open Source Program, a professional video editing software package.
Best as I can interpret the press release, the move to Open Source will be gradual and will start with a free download later this year. It’s not 100% clear to me that this means they are releasing Lightworks itself as Open Source (as OStatic is reporting), or if the Lightworks Open Source Program will serve as more of a introductory or “lite” version.
It’s a little vague, but I hope they are avoiding the “Open Core” model.
Licensing
The press release also doesn’t specify what license(s) the project would be released under.
Watching and waiting
In any case, I’ve been keeping an eye on the scene ever since “video editor” was specifically identified as a future vector for Moonlight infection in Linux.
As we see products like VideoLAN Movie Creator and Lightworks become available, I expect the dialog around the “video editor” application domain to get interesting!
