Wow, sad to hear that the new version of NX will be “only available under a closed source license“.
NoMachine NX is a very good remote desktop application, with several free and open source implementations of the NX protocol. It – either in the form of the official NoMachine NX client or the FreeNX client – has long been my first choice when I need a remote GUI.
Now it looks like the upcoming 4.0 will kill that for new versions, meaning the FLOSS versions of NX will likely remain with version 3 of things. Which in turn makes me fear NX is soon to be dead for FLOSS.
It’s a bit uncommon to see previously open source projects taken closed source, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

For a replacement that is GPL’d, look at Google’s neatx project:

Nevermind, spoke too soon, it has nxserver as a dependency.

It’s quite funny that that package lists nxserver as a dependency, because the INSTALL file for neatx (http://code.google.com/p/neatx/source/browse/branches/neatx/neatx-0.3/INSTALL?r=59) doesn’t mention it, nor does the makefile, and I don’t see any indication that any external modules are being used by it.

Hello everyone
I think not all hope is lost, look at this project, it looks quite promising:
http://winswitch.org/
open source, cross platform. It uses the NX protocol.
regards.

This is a real bummer. Neatx is nice, but it isn’t up to par with No Machine’s server yet. I hope google really steps up development of neatx.
